Crashing The Boards, and Taking Care Of Business!

Another game in the books between the two schools. Kentucky wins 69-62. Rebounding was THE key to this game, Kidd-Gilchrist put on his best Dennis Rodman impersonation by bringing down 19 rebounds, while adding 24 points. Terrence Jones came off the bench and added 11 rebounds but only had 2 points(get better pinkie) and Davis had his usual game, pouring in 18 points, swatting 6 shots, and grabbing 10 boards. Cats out rebounded the cards, 49-28. The cards did bother the cats however, with their press today, causing the cats to have 20 turnovers. Miller had 8 of those, Lamb and Teague had 4. A solid win though, as Kidd-Gilchrist just keeps playing great, and it was also good to see Jones become assertive, even if he did just have 2 points. Kentucky struggled shooting the ball, going 29.8% from the field, and 18.8% from behind the arc. The cats still managed to get the win and go to 13-1 on the season. Throw up the "Roc" as well, Jay Z was in attendance. Cats play Tuesday, against Arkansas-Little Rock, at 7pm, and then after that, SEC play begins on Saturday against South Carolina at 4pm @ Rupp Arena. Look for highlights from the game later in the evening!

Rajon Rondo Elbow to the Face

Rajon Rondo ends the game with 31 Points, 13 assists, and 5 steals.  The only other Boston Celtic to be the the over 30 points, over 10 assists, and over 5 steals in a game is Larry Bird.  Rondo is in good company. Also, Rondo had 1 elbow to the face, lol.

Jarnell Stokes College Decision - He Picks Tennessee

Jarnell Stokes decides to make Tennessee his college home.

Marquis Teague, Brandon Knight, and John Wall : The First 12 Games

Marquis Teague has completed 12 games in the early part of the season.  So how has Kentucky's 2011-2012 point guard performed so far?  Let's go to the stats and see how Teague matches up with Wall and Knight's first 12 games.

 Points Per Game
Teague: 10.92
Knight: 17.42
Wall:  17.82

Clearly, Teague is falling short in the points per game department when compared to Knight or Wall.  You can not put this all on Marquis however.  He is on a team loaded with other primary scorers.  Knight and Wall both held the brunt of the offensives on their respective teams.  Granted, they had other scorers around them too.  Simply put, Teague is not designed to be the top scorer on this team. Knight and Wall were.

Field Goal Percentage
Teague : 45.25 %
Wall : 53.23 %
Knight : 44.91

The fact that Teague is shooting better from the field that Brandon Knight is amazing.  I know he doesn't take as many shots as Knight did, but still it is a pretty solid accomplishment.  Wall and his freakishly fast layups bested both Knight and Teague through the first 12.

Assists Per Game
Teague: 4.5
Wall: 7
Knight: 3.92

Teague again falls short of John Wall.  Surprisingly, he has done better than Brandon Knight did this time last year.  To be fair to Brandon Knight, he had to be a scorer first point guard.  That hindered him from being able to rack up as many assists to stuff the stat sheet.

Turnovers Per Game
Teague: 2.92
Knight: 3.67
Wall: 4.45

If I asked someone who turns the ball over more between these three, I bet everyone would say Teague.  Wrong.  Teague has been able to keep the possession better than Wall or Knight so far.  He had many turnovers early but then quickly cleaned up his game.

Jerry Tipton Huge Insult to Sam Malone - Not the time nor the Place

Kentucky walk on Sam Malone suffered a season ending acl tear this week.  As always, Jerry Tipton was on the scene to ask another stupid and insensitive question to Malone.

Kentucky Wildcats Tickets Thursday December 22nd vs. Loyola - $ 5 Dollars

UK is giving the fans a unique opportunity this Thursday to see the Kentucky Wildcats in action. Due to the Christmas break, Kentucky is opening up the Erupption Zone to the general public. Tickets are an amazing $5 Dollars and can only be purchased at the ticket office 90 minutes before tip-off ! I would imagine you better line up early for this one ! Go Big Blue!

Kentucky 82, Samford 50

Cats easily defeated the Samford Bulldogs, 82-50. A great shooting performance from the cats, shooting exactly 50% from the field, and 42.9% from the three point line. The game was filled with back door layups, references to layup shooters, and a very quite rupp arena. The news of the game was Terrence Jones being out with a dislocated pinkie. With Jones being out gave Darius Miller the starting nod and Miller played very well, he seemed to get out of the shooting slump that he's been in, scoring 17 points, on 6 of 10 shooting from the field, and 3 for 6 from behind the three point line. The leading scorer of the game was the man in the picture above, Doron Lamb who finished with 26 points, 8 for 12 shooting from the field, and 4 for 6 from the three point line. Even though the cats win in double figures, just like Jay Williams mentioned at halftime, Kentucky needs Jones to go deep and possibly hang up number eight. Marquis Teague is improving, and showing growth at the point guard position. Teague attacking and being able to finish and/or finding the open man only makes this team even deadlier. I know this was a cupcake game but I felt like the team is figuring one another out. I'm sure coach Calipari is upset with so many backdoor cuts, but this was a good learning experience for if and when they play another team that runs the same style of offense. The Wildcats play at 1:00pm on Thursday vs Loyola Greyhounds. That's all for the game, hope for the same Thursday!

Picture of Terrence Jones Injured Finger and new Update

Ouch, that has to hurt.  Official word from Coach Cal is that Terrence has dislocated his pinkie finger on his shooting hand and is now listed as "Day to Day".  It is uncertain  if Terrence will be able to go on Tuesday or not.  Also, the Louisville game on the 31st will be in question as well. Glenn Logan , over at aseaofblue.com, reports that this kind of injury could take 3-6 weeks to fully recover. That's a long time.  Heal up quick TJ!

To the Kentucky Basketball Fan - Losing Hurts

After the buzzer beating three point shot that defeated Kentucky at Indiana on Saturday, I felt that old familiar sting of defeat down in my heart again.  As a fan, that was a really tough loss.  Kentucky went into Indiana as the number one team in America.  Like myself, most Kentucky fans expected a win against the unranked Hoosiers. Indiana had something else in mind.
Losing is hated by any average fan.  It is double hated by Kentucky fans. The Bluegrass was filled with gloomy faces and hurt feelings Sunday morning.  For people like me, a Kentucky loss has the ability to suck the air right out of you.  I know that we shouldn't be like that, however it is how we are.  Loving Kentucky basketball is how we were raised.
As bad as the latest Indiana loss felt, it was not even close to be considered the most hurtful loss that Kentucky has suffered.  The right champion and crown wearer to that title is hard to pick.  In all of Kentucky's rich basketball history we have suffered many pain staking defeats too.  The most recent losses come to mind first.  Last year, Kentucky fell short in the Final Four to UConn.  Turn the time back to 2003, Dwayne Wade and Marquette stop Kentucky's championship hopeful run in the NCAA Tournament. Really, I could go on and on.
Personally, the most hurtful Kentucky loss goes to the king of all college basketball games.  I'm talking about Duke vs. Kentucky in 1992.  I was 11 years old.  My memories of that day are still pretty vivid.  Being a Clay County native, I had an added interest as homegrown Richie Farmer was apart of that Kentucky team.   That game had my whole attention through out.  Dad sat right next to me, as we both watched in amazement of the back and forth game.  Finally, Sean Woods drives the lane and make an awkward shot that made my 11 year old self think he was Michael Jordan. Kentucky had won the game and I was celebrating.  Moments later, Christian Laettner hit the shot heard round the Commonwealth.  The joy on my face turned quickly to shock and unbelief.  He just didn't beat us , did he?  When reality set in, shock and unbelief turned to hearbreak by way of a tear rolling down my cheek. Yes, Christian Laettner and the Duke Blue Devils made this little boy cry. I have never felt pain like that from a basketball game since, and I would most likely say I will never feel that again.

Terrence Jones had a Bad Day, but it's not the end of the world

Terrence Jones had a bad day.  That's the bottom line.  Twitter is all abuzz with questions about Terrence Jones and his lack of superstar performance against Indiana.  Coach Cal said it best after the game : " These kids aren't machines. They all have bad days."  I know that the Kentucky fans demand much, in which you can rank me at the top.  However, I feel like I should defend Terrence a little today.
First things first, Terrence Jones is still a young kid.  He is just a sophomore that still has much to learn. There was a load of pressure on TJ going into the Indiana game.  It is no easy task for any team to go into Indiana and get a win, especially with this years  squad.
Next, this was just one game.  It happens to the best of them.  Jones struggled , never got into rhythm, and disappeared from the action.  He is still learning.  Michael Jordan scored 8 points on March 22 1986 against the Cavs.  Does anybody remember that? No.  I'm sure Terrence will take what he needs from this game and fix it.  When they are hanging banner # 8, we will all look back and laugh at this. Right?

Coach Cal sums it up best......

Xavier Cincinnati Basketball Fight

Kentucky Wildcats fall to Indiana, The Free Throw Line , and Referee TV Teddy Valentine

John Calipari's road record at Kentucky is now 11-10.  Kentucky , in their first true road game fell short to a hungry Indiana team.  Coach Cal's Cats could not get over the hump, missing several free throws down the stretch that could sealed a victory for them.
Dick Vitale pointed out( an insane number of times) that Terrence Jones was having an off game.  I agree with Dick Vitale(mark it down) that Jones was not on his best tonight.
I am not going to blame the refs on this game. Kentucky beat themselves today by not hitting their free throws.  However, you have to shake your head at some of the no whistles.  Kidd-Gilchrist got beat up all game and didn't get any love from TV Teddy Valentine.  By the way, I'm pretty sure they have a losing record whenever Mr. Valentine is the ref.
Overall, the Cats will have to take this as a learning experience.  Until now, the freshmen didn't know what the sting of a loss felt like.   Now they know.  It's time to regroup and get better.

Jarnell Stokes Update

Jarnell Stokes may make an impact on college basketball sooner than first expected.  According to Rivals.com, Jarnell Stokes is rated as the # 11 overall player in the 2012 class.  The thing is, Stokes may leave the 2012 class and jump on over to college as early as January.  He has set up his high school classes so that he can graduate this semester, then enroll in college in the spring.  Kentucky is currently listed as 1 in 6 schools that he is considering.  What could one more five star player add to this already star studded Kentucky Wildcat lineup?
