Willie Cauley Decision- Welcome to Kentucky

Willie Cauley , a 7 foot center out of Kansas, has committed to Kentucky . Cauley joins Archie Goodwin in being the second player Coach Cal has landed for the 2012 class.  This is a huge commitment for UK, especially since Anthony Davis is projected to leave after 1 year. ESPN currently ranks Willie Cauley # 32 overall in the 2012 class.

Which Class Will Be The Best?

As the UK basketball season draws closer, I can't help but wonder just how great this incoming freshmen class will stack up against the 2 classes before them. I attended Big Blue Madness and watched the Blue/White game on TV, and this group already looks like they have way more chemistry than the previous 2 classes. They may be the most athletic college team I've ever seen, its scary. Every guy in this class can do pretty much anything on the court, they can shoot, pass, dribble, rebound, they are all great defenders, not many flaws in this group. Their only weakness may be strength-wise. They don't have anybody that physically overwhelms you,But their shot blocking ability makes up for that. All that being said, where do you think this group stacks up? Lets compare them with the previous 2 classes.

The 2010-2011 Cats featured freshmen Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb, Enes Kanter, Stacey Poole, Eloy Vargas, and walk-on Jared Polson. Kanter unfortunately never got to play, thanks to Mark Emmert and his wishy-washy, overpowering, corrupt NCAA. Knight was ranked as the top recruit in the nation by most recruiting sites, and he was as good as advertised. He averaged 17.3 points and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 37 percent from 3 point range. He made one big shot after another in the 2011 NCAA tournament, including a 20-foot fade away jumper to beat top-seeded Ohio State. Terrence Jones came in as a heralded recruit out of Portland, he was highly touted for his athleticism and quickness at the 4 position. He averaged 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, but spent most of the season struggling to find consistency on both ends of the floor. Doron Lamb came to UK as a 3-point artist, and that he was. He averaged 49.7 percent from deep while averaging 12.3 points per game. Vargas and Poole were both disappointing last season, neither player made much contribution at all.

When John Calipari inked the 2009-2010 class, he created a media firestorm. The class was heralded as the best in school history and best class since the Fab Five at Michigan. The class consisted of John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton and Jon Hood. Wall came in as the most highly sought-after recruit of the decade, and he lived up to the overwhelming hype. A human highlight reel, he averaged 16.6 ppg, not to mention breaking the school record for assists in a season with 241. He brought a swagger that few players have, he knew he was a superstar, and you could sense it when you watched him play. Cousins came in as a high risk/high reward type of player, he was labeled as a guy who had amazing talent, but was a loose cannon. Calipari took the risk, and it paid off greatly. Cousins quickly took the nation by storm as he was being compared to all-time great college centers like Shaquille O'neal. He averaged 15.1 ppg and 9.9 rebounds, basically a double-double a game. He was a force of nature in the paint, and he brought a "not in my house" attitude that was contagious, the team fed off his competitive fire. Eric Bledsoe spent the season in John Wall's shadow, but it didn't stop him from getting national attention and eventually becoming an NBA first pick just like Wall. Bledsoe had blazing speed, great play making ability, was a more consistent jump shooter than Wall, and was a great defender. He averaged 11.3 points and 2.9 assists per game. He was the streakiest shooter I have ever seen, he could light it up one night, and the next night, I could out-shoot him. Daniel Orton came in as a shot-blocking machine who had good size and strength in the post. He never really lived up to the expectations, and clashes with Calipari over playing time caused him to make the wrong decision and go pro after just averaging 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Basically a wasted talent. Darnell Dodson came to UK regarded as a 3-point shooter, but he struggled with consistency, averaging 34 percent from deep. He also stayed in John Calipari's doghouse, eventually being dismissed from the team after the 2010 season stemming from issues with the law. I never thought he was good enough to play at UK anyway. Jon Hood never made much contribution to UK during his freshman season, and as much as I hate to say it, he may never will.

So, I'm challenging everybody who reads this post to comment and tell me which of Calipari's first 3 classes is the best. I wanna hear some good arguments. Go Cats.

Gary Parrish Makes His SEC Predictions

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has made his SEC Predictions. Along with everyone else picked Kentucky to win the league, and placed Teague, Jones, and Davis on the all SEC first team. Doron Lamb made the second team. Parrish seemed UK friendly giving Anthony Davis the new comer of the year nod, and the new and improved Terrence Jones SEC player of the year honors.
Vanderbilt got picked second, and Florida was predicted to be the third best team by Parrish. I'm perfectly fine with Parrish's picks except that Darius Miller was snubbed from the first and second team. I know that there is a lot of talent in the SEC this season but how can the SEC tournament MVP be left off the list. I guess there still might be some doubters with Miller, but it's time for the experienced senior to prove the non-believers wrong.

The NBA Lockout Effect - How is Kentucky impacted?

-     David Stern, NBA Commissioner, just announced that all NBA games have been canceled through November 30th. Both NBA players and the owners can't seem to find any common ground to get the bargaining agreement done.   There is , however, some glimmering hope at the end of the dark long tunnel.  Reports are increasing that the sides are getting much closer on being able to reach a deal.  The mood is really much lighter than a few weeks ago, when it looked as if there may be no NBA season at all.  Granted, this is millionaires arguing with billionaires, in which I hold no sympathy for either side.  I do ponder about how the results of these two groups will effect a group of basketball players that I have much more concern for.  Let's examine how the impending NBA collective bargaining agreement will impact the future of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.
Beyond money issues, the players and owners also must agree on an age limit for NBA rookies.  Under the current system, players must be one year removed from high school before they can declare for the NBA Draft.  Unless you've been hiding under a rock, Kentucky has hosted many one and done players in the two years that Coach Cal has been at the helm of our Kentucky Wildcats ship.  In his first year, Kentucky broke the NBA record with 5 players drafted in the first round, 4 of which were one and done freshman.  Last season, Brandon Knight followed in the footsteps of John Wall being drafted in the first round after only 1 college season.  Currently, the Wildcats have 3 or possibly 4 freshman that may hold the ability to enter the draft after their inaugural college year.  Anthony Davis, in particular, could very well be the # 1 pick in next year's draft.  To say that the outcome of this lockout is important to Kentucky would be an understatement.
What would happen if the player union gets what they want in the agreement? The player age limit and 1 year college rule would be eliminated.  The union would love to see players be able to enter the draft straight out of high school.  This would affect not only Coach Cal's recruiting, but the talent level in all of college basketball.  We all know that Cal believes the only way to win championships is with the best players right out of the gate.  Now, Coach John Calipari has to compete only with the top NCAA basketball powerhouses to lure those players to Kentucky.  If the NBA Players Union have their way, Cal would also have to compete with the NBA.  I would imagine that it is much easier to persuade a top talent to come to Kentucky over another college, rather than to dissuade him from making millions of dollars in the NBA.  The latter is a much harder sell.  I actually think if anybody can do it , Coach Cal would be the man. Still, his job will get so much tougher if the players get their way on this issue.
What about the owners? What do they want?  The billionaire side of the table would like to mirror the NFL rule, in which players would have to go to school 3 years.  The thought of John Wall staying with us for three seasons makes me drool in awe a little. No doubt, this would force the players that Cal recruits to hang around with us for a while longer, becoming much more familiar with each other and the dribble drive offense.  It is hard to argue that this wouldn't help the game of college basketball, making it so much more entertaining because of the increased number of developed talent on the floor.  However, there would be some negative impact on recruiting.  For instance, coming to Kentucky would be a much tougher decision for Anthony Davis if he knew he had to play behind DeMarcus Cousins for 2 more years.  More than likely, he may have opted to go to another school were he had a more immediate impact.  Last year, Brandon Knight most assuredly would not have committed to Kentucky if John Wall was still at point.  Again, this option will make Coach Calipari's job of recruiting very difficult.
There is a happy medium.  I am going to predict that both sides will reach a compromise.  In order to reach a deal , both the millionaire and billionaires are going to have to give in a little. I believe the new rule will raise the age limit to 20, resulting in a player be forced to stay in college for 2 seasons.  I think that Kentucky will benefit greatly from this decision.  Coach Cal wouldn't have compete with the NBA when visiting a recruit. There still would be an issue with convincing top talent to come in and play behind super sophomores for one season.  I'm sure that Cal wouldn't have too much trouble spinning that situation to a recruit, in a way that the recruit feels benefited by getting to play under the more experienced talent.
No matter the outcome of the NBA lockout, there will be some impact on the future of Kentucky basketball.  My hopes are that the players and owners find a way to come together really soon. I am very anxious to have my questions on the age limit answered. One thing is for sure, whatever the outcome I am glad that Coach Cal is in the drivers seat at the University of Kentucky.

Willie Cauley Nears Decision

Willie Cauley, a 7'0 foot, 225 pound center out of Olathe, Kansas looks to make his college choice next week. Cauley is down to four schools, Alabama, Florida, Kansas State, and Kentucky. Some think he's going to Kansas State, being close to home. Signing period in November is going to be exciting to see. The 2012 class is very thin at the moment, and many are beginning to grow impatient with no recruits committing. Cauley would be a great pick up for next year. His length and height would be a great fill in if the cats were to lose Jones and Davis.

ESPN Not Top Ten OOPS - ESPN Makes a Terrible Error

I normally love watching ESPN's "Not Top Ten" plays on Sportscenter.  My eyes lit up today, when Terrence Williams' missed dunk,  at the Pros vs. Villains Game, made the list.  My smile turned quickly into a frown, after the host said " Terrence Jones with the windmill dunk, not so much" Then, just seconds later, referred to him again as Terrence Jones . OOPS ! If I was Terrence "Sweet T" Jones, I would be insulted !

Blue White Game Review with Nate Hubbard

The AP Poll has been released

The first AP poll is out and the cats come in ranked second. UNC is ranked ahead of the Cats at #1, while Connecticut, Syracuse, and Duke round out the top five. Florida, and Vanderbilt come in at seven, and eight respectively. While Pitino and the Cardinals rank in at nine. To see the entire ranking, click here.

Joe Lunardi's Bracketology

After reading Joe Lunardi's bracketology today I like what I see. It's not been updated since May but after seeing the road he has for Kentucky to the final four is very intriguing. Will the NCAA be that generous? I doubt it. Kentucky in the Louisville region is a big plus for the cats. They would stay close to home, and with the SEC tournament being in New Orleans, it gives them a slight advantage going into the final four. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my behalf but if Lunardi is right, a perfect road for number 8? Let's enjoy game by game, but it doesn't hurt to think ahead sometimes. Kentucky Wildcats Blue White Game Review -

It was a cold and rainy walk into Rupp Arena before the Blue White Scrimmage tonight.  The temperature soon rose, as the Wildcats heated it up from the floor.  The Cats put on a blistering offensive performance, unlike I can ever remember for a Blue White game.
The offensive onslaught was led by Terrence Jones, who Coach Cal believes is the best player in the country today.  Jones ended the game with 52 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Impressive would be an understatement.  Jones looked so much better in this exhibition than he had the previous season.  I was impressed with how well he handled the ball up and down the floor.  His shot looked much better also, with a noticeably quicker release. If this game is any indication, there is no doubt that Jones will be in the running for player of the year.
Kyle Wiltjer is as pure shooter.  He has the ability to drain it from three at any given time.  If Wiltjer spots up and sets his feet, chances are great that he is going to knock it down.  His shot is so smooth looking.  I don't think it would be fair to compare his shot with another great shooter.  It's really his own.  I see big things in his future.
After the game, we went down into the media room , waiting on Coach Cal.  Calipari was not as amazed with the offensive showing as we all were.  Cal was very upset over the lack of defense played in the second half.  He felt like the players let alot of those last dunks and layups go uncontested.
In summary, we have a very talented team this year.  ESPN, get your highlight reel team ready because UK will have many players on the Top Ten list this season.  Scary good is an appropriate term for this offensive powerhouse.  If Cal can instill a defensive mindset in this group of young men, as good as their offensive game is, then there is no limit where the Kentucky Wildcats can go! Got 8?

Kentucky recruiting update; Gary Harris and Amile Jefferson report

Per zagsblog: Over the weekend, Gary Harris, and Amile Jefferson visited Kentucky. Both recruits seemed to have a great time on their visit. Harris, a 6'4 shooting guard out of Indianapolis, Indiana, who is ranked #25 according to rivals for the 2012 class. Harris' father told zagsblog.com:

Well, in my opinon, basketball teams coaches, and fans look too much into positions," he told the site(bluegrasshoops.com)."I think players should be able to play multiple laces, as Kentucky is doing right now.I don't really see a problem with Archie Goodwin being there. Coach Cal has proved he can make things works. As for Archie's game, he is a high-level talent and great player." Harris looks to decide after he visits Michigan State in early November. In the running along with Kentucky, and Michigan State is Indiana, and Purdue.

Amile Jefferson, who is a 6'7 forward out of Philadelphia Pennsylvania, who is ranked #36 according to rivals for the 2012 class. Amile's father had this to say about the visit:

"The visit went fine," Malcom Musgrove, Jefferson's father, told SNY.tv Monday night by phone."They want him. They were a little late in recruiting him but had an opportunity to see him late in the summer."Musgrove said Kentucky coach John Calipari likes what does as a combo forward. They think that his style of play suits what they do well, creating mismatches and that's what he is. He's a mismatch nightmare.

Joining Kentucky for possible suitors for Jefferson, is Kentucky, N.C. State, Uconn, Villanova, Temple, and Ohio State. Jefferson plans to make his college decision in the early November signing period.

That's the recruiting update for the night. Sam will have a recap on the Blue/White game later.

Will Kentucky be able to shoot the 3 better than last year!?

No question that Kentucky is going to be really, really good this season. They've got the length, athleticism, and from how practices have went so far they work extremely hard. The team seems sort of flawless you would think with all the weapons that it possesses, but Matt Jones from Kentucky Sports Radio stated the other day that the weakness for the cats would be their three point shooting and doesn't think that they'll be able to shoot from outside the perimeter as well as last season.
Jones' statement caused a uproar among the big blue nation with the statement. Many people think that this team is perfect and simply doesn't have a flaw but, a big but here...if you look at this team, and dissect it right to the core and try and find that flaw, three point shooting is it. I agree with what Matt had to say and here's my reason why.
Yeah, were returning Lamb who is arguably a top five shooter in the nation, and Miller returns who has improved tremendously over the past two seasons on his outside jumper, and you would think with the addition of Kyle Wiltjer who won the Mcdonalds All-American three point contest that we would have to be better than last seasons. Were simply not going to be as good with all those players returning and a new guy draining them as well for the simple fact, that we lost Brandon Knight and were a completely different team than last season.
Last season, we relied a whole lot on the three point line because we weren't able to score all over the floor. Knight and Harrelson were a deadly threat with Knight coming off a Harrelson screen and squaring up for a long distance J. Knight having the ball the majority of the time was key for us shooting the ball so well last year. Him being a deadly shooter only makes Lamb, Miller, and Jones a threat as well. This season in comparison will have Teague running the point who isn't as good of a three point shooter as Knight was/is. This team has more threats on the floor than last season. The addition of Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist, and the improvement of Jones will make this team very difficult to defend. After seeing this team at the big blue madness, and reading reports in practice this team don't have to rely on the three point line like last seasons' team did. This year will be very different, for the first time in three seasons with Cal at the helm, we will be able to see the dribble drive work at it's best.
There ya have it...different team who doesn't have to rely on the three point line like last seasons had to, and Teague running the show instead of Knight will make us not as good as last seasons. Not saying were going to be a horrible three point shooting team, but not as good as last seasons.

Kentucky Wildcats Blue White Game Preview

2011-    On October 26th, we will get our first real feel of the 2011-2012 Kentucky Wildcats.  I know that we witnessed 20 minutes of offensive glory during Big Blue Madness, however I don't believe that the BBM exhibition gives you a true account of how this team is going to perform.  Don't get me wrong, I loved watching the offensive powerhouses we have at UK this year show out with alley-oops and threes galore !  That made for some really entertaining basketball.  There was one thing lacking , however, from the show at Big Blue Madness.  Defense!
At the Blue White Scrimmage, we will see for the first time the defensive sets that this team will be running this year.  I am very interested to see how well the super freshmen adapt to the collegiate defensive game.  Reports are abound around the hype of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.   Matt Jones and his writers  often refer to Kidd-Gilchrist as the replacement for DeAndre Liggins.  Those are some really tough shoes to fill.  It took Liggins 3 seasons to earn his name on the defensive end.  Kidd-Gilchrist has not played a single game and we're already comparing him to Liggins.  I hope the hype is true , and Kidd Gilchrist shows us that he plays "as advertised" on D.
Not only will we get to see how well our defensive settings look early, we will also get to witness how our players are developing in the area of attacking opposing defense.  Are these Cats learning the Dribble Drive offense with ease?  Will we see Anthony Davis post up?  How will Kyle Wiltjer be used in the offensive settings?  These are all questions I am very eager to have answered on Wednesday night.
Thus far, I'm writing as if this Blue White scrimmage will be the say all end all of how well our team is going to play this year.  That is not correct.  Even though we will see many more true sets, this is still just a scrimmage.  I don't expect to see the players playing with Final Four intensity during the game.  I do, however, expect to see a team playing hard and developing early.  I don't think we will learn everything we need or want to know about the Cats during the scrimmage, but I think we will know much more about them than we do now.

Sports Illustrated Ranks Kentucky

Luke Winn of Sports Illustrated ranked the Cats front court and back court in a recent article on sports Illustrated. Cats' front court came in at #2 with the return of Terrence Jones, Eloy Vargas, and the new additions of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Anthony Davis, and Kyle Wiltjer. Kentucky ranked #2 behind the University of North Carolina as they returned Harrison Barnes, John Henson, Tyler Zellar, and a new addition in James Michael McAdoo. This only hypes the December 3rd match up between the Cats and Heels.

Cats' back court came in at #3 with the return of Doron Lamb, Darius Miller, and new additions in Marquis Teague, and Twany Beckham. Kentucky ranked #3 behind Florida, and Duke and if your wondering, UNC ranked in at #5. I think if you look at all the rankings the cats freshmen and upperclassmen have been hyped. Just living up to it is the key.

NBA Cancels Games - Now what?

2011- Years from now, today may very well be looked upon as "D" Day for the NBA.  Today, NBA owners and player met for 8 straight hours with no compromise.  At the conclusion of the meeting, David Stern had no choice but to cancel the first 2 weeks of the NBA regular season.  It gets worse from here.

The ominous part about today's sad new is that no further meeting are scheduled between the conflicting sides. If the two sides never meet, a resolution will never happen.  In that case, that means more games are sure to be canceled as the days march on.

Fan of the Day - Anthony Davis Edition

Alan Cutler has a man crush on The Most Hated Man In Kentucky

2011- LEX 18's very own Alan Cutler got an "exclusive interview" with Christian Laettner today. The complete article can be found "here" I thought the tone that Alan used in this article was very odd.  He seemed to paint "The Loathed One" Christian Laettner as a good guy.  Maybe good guy is not the correct term.  Nevertheless, Cutler was trying to portray Mr. Laettner in a better light for the UK fans. Alan, I'm sorry to say, it didn't work.

The one area that really got my blood boiling in the interview with Laettner was is thoughts on the Timberlake step.(If your not for sure what I'm talking about, see video below) "The Loathed One" says that stepping intentionaly on Timberlake was nothing more than "bratty" behavior.  He didn't mean to try to hurt him.  Mike Tyson didn't mean to bite of Holyfield's ear either I guess. Here is a quote from Laettner "They hate the fact that I beat their team. They hate the fact that I stepped on Timberlake, but that's all part of the game. Sometimes you lose with a buzzer beater and sometimes you win with a buzzer beater."

Cutler's last question to his readers  in the article, "Do you hate him a little less?" I'll let my readers answer that one !
