A Man Among Boys - Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Over the years, few freshman have impressed me as much as Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has.  I realize that it is still early in the season, but I believe Kidd-Gilchrist is the glue that holds the Kentucky Wildcats together.  When I watch him play, I see something really special.
In sports, I mostly dislike the constant comparison to players who have come and gone before.  With that said, I am about to make a huge comparison.    While watching his intensity on the court in his first few games wearing the blue and white, I began to notice something.  I thought to myself, "Where have I seen this before?"  Then it hit me, Kidd-Gilchrist has that "Michael Jordan" essence around him. He has that same drive and will to win on his face, just as MJ had so many times.
Don't start hating on me yet for such a big time reference between Jordan and Kidd-Gilchrist that I have made.  Please don't think I am comparing their style of play.  I'm not.  Kidd-Gilchrist and Jordan have something much deeper in common. It is that fire that is in their eyes, like a lion after it's prey.  Some say I have that same look in my eye right before I down a double cheeseburger.  My point is that Kidd-Gilchrist is portraying that same level of intensity that Jordan had.
When Kentucky suits up against St. Johns on Thursday, pay close attention to Kidd-Gilchrist.  Let's pretend you never watched a UK game before and didn't know any of the players.  If I asked you to name the seniors on the team, I bet you would say " Kidd-Gilchrist".  He just looks different than anybody else on the floor.  You can tell that he is on a whole other level.

Everything Kentucky Online Original Video - Kentucky vs. North Carolina Teaser

Kentucky grinds out a 62-52 win over Old Dominion

Kentucky pulls out a win in what was one of the ugliest games I have witnessed in the last few years.  There was all kinds of things that happened during the game that caused it to be such a grinder.  Factors like energy, silly plays and officiating all played into this mess that we all just sat through.
I have to talk a little about the officiating during this game.  Consistency is the one thing you ask for from a referee when your a basketball coach at any level of the game.  I don't mean to say that I think that the officials blew the whistle one way for one team and another for the other team.  I'm talking about being consistent on how you pull the trigger on calls throughout the game.  A player can adjust how he goes into the rest of the game by how tight or loose the ref is calling the action.  Today, neither team had that luxary, as the refs called it different at different times. Many time the whistle was loose .  Contrary, at other times, the whistle was really tight.
Silly play also had the Cats struggling throughout this game.  Marquis Teague really pressed things at times.  Just as with the Kansas game, Teague suffered from way too many turnovers in the first half.  On the bright side, Teague adjusted and played a much better game in the second.
I have to wonder where the Kentucky energy was today?  It is my theory that being away from Lexington for such a long span has had much to do with Kentucky's slow start today.  The level of defense that we are accustomed to seeing from the Wildcats did not show up until late in the first half.  Again, being positive, Coach Cal led his team out of the locker room after the half with much more defensive pressure.
Darius Miller is key to the Wildcats success early in the season.  I'm still on the fence if I am on the same page with Cal to keep Miller on the bench to start the game.  Being such a young team, Kentucky plays so much better when Darius Miller has the ball.  I wonder if it would  help us, if for some length of time, Coach Cal would put Miller on point?  He has the most experience on the team and is a proven winner.
Overall, I am pleased to see how well the Cats adjusted in the second half to the Old Dominion zone defense.  It was just an ugly grinder of a game.  When we look back after the season a "W" is all we will remember.  A win is a win, no matter how ugly it is.

Quick Thoughts on Kentucky vs. Kansas - Post Game

ESPN did me no favors tonight by having Dick Vitale call the Kentucky vs. Kansas game.  Who knew one man could hate the 3 goggles so much? Also, I hope that someone tells him that Kidd-Gilchrist got his "Kidd" name from his Uncle and not his mom.  Vitale said that he watched "Prayers for a Perfect season".  You can't blame him for getting things wrong. He was too busy drooling over Coach K and talking about how good North Carolina is.  The game that he was announcing obviously wasn't as important as that.  ESPN, please hire Gus Johnson.
Now that I have ranted about Dick Vitale enough, let's discuss the game.  Kentucky started off really slow and sloppy.  Their opening half play was to be expected for such a young team.  Marquis Teague had an absolute terrible first half.  Someone on Facebook joked that Teague committed 2 more turnovers during the half, after the buzzer sounded.

The second half was something entirely different for UK. Coming out of the lockeroom, Kentucky played some lock down defense and began to loosen up on the offensive side of the floor.  It always struck me funny how playing good defense almost always equals a better offensive game.  Doron Lamb really opened up the big lead by knocking down his trademark three pointers.  Dick Vitale must have almost blown his top because of Doron Lamb's three point goggles.
To summarize , Kentucky proved to the nation that they are a legitimate # 2 ranked team.  A rough start turned into a beat down of a very good Kansas JayHawk team.  The freshmen played like freshmen at times, yet played spectacular at others. There is still much room for improvement, however I think the sky is the limit for this Kentucky Wildcat team.

Stacey Poole Leaves Kentucky- It's official

Coach Cal just released news on his website that Stacey Poole has decided to transfer. Below is an expert from CoachCal.com :

"In Stacey Poole’s case, I feel if he would have stayed, eventually he would have had a breakthrough and had his opportunity. I told his family, “Look, if he needs a week or two weeks to decide what he wants to do and he decides he wants to come back and play the year out, he can do that. I’ll do whatever he wants to do.”

"Having said that, Stacey and his family felt it is in his best interest to play somewhere else and I fully respect the family and their decision. I want to wish Stacey nothing but the best in whatever and wherever he chooses to go. He will always be a part of our family and the Big Blue Nation."

Anthony Davis Impresses, Kentucky Wins Big 108-58

Anthony Davis showed up in a big way against Marist tonight. Davis ended the game with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 assists.  That is a really impressive stat line, unlike one that I have saw in a long time.  Kidd-Gilchrist played very well as always.  Terrence Jones played a solid game, with 8 points and 9 boards.

Another rap song dedicated to the Cats!

The Terrence Jones Wreck- A Break Down of Events

2:30 AM - Larry Warren(Jones' friend) , Terrence Jones , and Stacey Poole Jr. were involved in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver(the other vehicle). In fear of getting involved in an altercation with the drunk driver(and probably hopeful Coach Cal didn't find out he was out at 2:30am) Jones left the scene.  Later on, to tend to some minor injuries , Jones took himself to the hospital.  Both Jones and Stacey Poole are fine apart from scrapes.

1. Jones nor Poole were doing anything illegal.

2. Jones used bad judgment to be out at 2:30 am on a game night, but since UK didn't have any curfew as of last night, broke no rules.

3.A passenger does not have to stay in the car when an accident takes place. Nothing illegal went on with Jones leaving.

4.LEX 18 is reporting that Jones looked intoxicated, but it was from an unnamed source. That claim is just that, a claim with nothing to back it up so far.

Quote from Coach Cal.

Our players did not break any rules by being out last night. As of yesterday, this team did not have a curfew and our normal procedure is to begin the season without one. I usually let the actions of my team determine a curfew. However, because of the actions of a select few, this team has showed me an inability to make proper judgment and decisions that they’ve been given the freedom to make.
Therefore, going forward, this team will now have a curfew for the rest of the season. I will inform the team of a time later today.
We hold our players to a higher standard at Kentucky. They must learn that they’ve been placed in a leadership role and that every action defines this team, this state and its fans.  As always, any additional punishment will be handled within the team.

Coach Cal Post Game Comments

Kentucky wins by 85, score of 125-40

If you were not already excited about the upcoming basketball season, Kentucky gave us a glimpse of what could be to come after beating Morehouse tonight. The Kentucky Wildcats put on an absolute basketball clinic for the world.  They dominated in every aspect of the game.
Let's break the game down into a couple things that we learned about the Wildcats during this game. First, I am really excited about the future of Anthony Davis.  Davis played much more aggressive in this second exhibition. Anthony is so long and athletic that he is going to be a terror for opposing teams this year.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has yet to disappoint thus far this early season.   Without a doubt, he plays with more heart and fire than any freshman that I can ever remember.   His defensive game is superb.  Offensively, Kidd-Gilchrist is becoming the best finisher on the team.
John Calipari is known for producing talented point guards year after year.  Rose, Wall, Knight are some just to name a few.  After the season is over, you can add Marquis Teague to that list.  Teague is a true point guard who thrives to make his team better.  He looks to already have a strong grasp on the dribble drive offense.  In my opinion, he is already further along in his development than Knight or Wall in their first 2 games. Wall , without any argument is a better scorer and much faster, but Teague looks to be ahead in running the team's offense thus far.
Kyle Wiltjer led the team in scoring with 26 points.  He has a really sweet jumper, and an awkward but effective sky hook.  I think his role on this team will be that of a spot up shooter and trailer. Kyle has so much potential oozing out of him that it is scary.
Terrence Jones was player of the year Terrence Jones.  Again, he looked so much better and more fluid with the basketball.  Terrence has had to work many hours on his jump shot over the summer.  That hard work has paid off because I noticed a big difference in his timing and release.  If he can continue to grow and learn to go right even more I think he may be unstoppable.
I know that I sound all giddy like a kid opening his Christmas presents, but I can't help it.  This Kentucky Wildcats team has got many people buzzing over the hopes of championship banner # 8.  I know that they played a much weaker competition today, however the things Kentucky did right tonight is really what impressed me.

Kentucky Wildcats Helmet Award

Coach Cal recently placed the above pic on his Facebook Wall.

Doug Gottlieb Hates Kentucky(And North Carolina)

ESPN's Doug Gottlieb likes to go against the grain.  Today, he gave the Big Blue Nation and the state of North Carolina a reason to dislike him.  I really had to scratch my head when I saw his preseason rankings. Not only did he snub North Carolina of the # 1 spot, replacing them with UCONN-????-, but he also ranked Kentucky at # 4.  Every other respected sports analyst has UNC at # 1 and UK at # 2 . Wow Doug, you really know your basketball.

Kentucky Wildcats First Look - What we learned about this team.

Basketball season has finally kicked off. It seems like it was such along time ago when the Wildcats lost to UConn in the Final Four.  Tonight we got our first look at the 2011-2012 Wildcats against real life competition.  As expected , the game started off pretty ugly.  Kentucky's defense was lacking, giving up many open looks to Transylvania.  It didn't take long, however, for the Cats to settle down and build on their lead.
One of the most exciting things I learned from watching this exhibition was the amount of time Kentucky is going to play pressure defense.  I absolutely love watching teams that play in this style.  The press forces everyone's intensity to climb at a high level.  As advertised, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist impressed me more than anyone while running that pressure D .   There is not too many top talents you can get to hustle and go after the ball in an exhibition game like Kidd-Gilchrist did tonight.
Anthony Davis has alot to learn, but you see all the potential in the world in this guy.  I have no doubt in my mind that he will lead the SEC and possibly the NCAA in blocks this season.  You can tell he also has an offense game even though he didn't have the greatest game on that side of the floor.  That will come as the season goes on.
Terrence Jones gave me no reason to think he couldn't be the player of the year once it's all said and done.  His body language is so much better than last season.  Jones looks so comfortable with the ball, and doesn't hesitate when he makes a decision what to do with the basketball.  The fact that he has beefed up so much doesn't hurt either.
Who knew how much fire Marquis Teague had? This was just an exhibition, and at times, he was playing like it was the NCAA Big Dance.  I had questions before this game on how well Teague can run this team.  My questions were answered tonight, in which I believe Teague is the right man for the job.  He is a pure point guard with a shooting ability that I didn't realize he had.
Overall, this was a very impressive performance by the Kentucky Wildcats.  A rough start turned into solid play as the game progressed.  They have so much potential on the defensive side of the floor that I can hardly sit still while I'm thinking about it. Kentucky fans are in for a treat this season.  John Calipari has his team playing with a style that the UK fan base have dreamed about for years.

Stacey Poole Jr, - Leaving the Team?

Everything Kentucky Online sources are confirming that Stacey Poole Jr. is no longer a Kentucky Wildcat.  When Matt Jones first broke the story, my mind first went to Poole.  Poole didn't really look happy at BBM, especially since the staff messed up his introduction.  With the talent level of Kentucky this season, Poole most likely would be riding the bench again. I hope that Poole finds a home and can contribute somewhere.

Breaking News- Possible Trouble for Kentucky Wildcats Roster

Matt Jones , of Kentucky Sports Radio, is reporting that there may be some movement in the University of Kentucky roster.  Matt Jone's tweet(see below) suggests that there is a player who's future at Kentucky may be uncertain.  I'll report more as soon as any news is released.
