"The General"
As I set here thinking about the once great Indiana University basketball coach, now senile ESPN sports analyst Bob Knight I am forced to make a mental connection to an old neighborhood dog that once tortured the residing children of the area.
Growing up for us was no different than most. We had the colorful neighbors and local nuisances that grew to become legend, just as Bobby has. One particular nuisance was a once great, now rabid championship breeding dog that everyone referred to as The General.
The General earned his nickname torturing small children by imposing fear from a glaring emotionless stare, and a powerful bark that to a young boy seemed to shake the surrounding houses. Then there was the ever present terror of potential danger The General could do to a kid if her ever got them by the throat.
As a kid in our neighborhood there was daily potential for serious harm if The General had his mind set on handing it out, and you never knew what would set him off. The threat was ever present and accepted as part of life, kind of what I imagine it to have been like in the Indiana locker room.
Inevitably, as the old cliché goes, you can’t bite the hand that feeds you. We all knew it would happen eventually, and it did. One evening as the owner bent to set out food for the foaming neighborhood Hitler he was given the same treatment the neighborhood kids had received on a daily basis… a horrific bite on the ***.
This proverbial bite on the *** is mirrored by Coach Knight’s actions being overlooked as he berated and assaulted Indiana University players and staff until he physically assaulted his “owner” former UI athletic director, Clarence Doninger leading to his dismissal from his coaching position.
As with Doninger, the owner of the demon dog had been told on numerous occasions about the General and his offensive actions but chose to disregard the accusations. After all, the dog was once a champion. Only after The General turned on his owner and the initial onset of disbelief from the attack had faded was the decision made to put the rabid dog down.
This is where my comparison with Bobby Knight and the neighborhood bully chihuahua stops. The chihuahua wasn’t given a national stage to berate UK basketball fans which also includes an overwhelming number of children.
A part time sports analyst insulting the fans and coach of the team that just won the national championship doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for any network trying to maintain any credibility to what winning a national title means and seems bad for NCAA basketball. If you want to stir up ratings get an active coach to call out a national champ, not a guy who won his last title almost twenty five years ago, and has since threatened the well being of women, young men, and the people who put food on his table.
What are the benefits of yet another televised or media fed Bobby Knight tantrum? Is this going to be another example of how Bobby Knight takes a great gig and lets his mouth and actions "backdoor" his relevancy?
One thing is for certain, Coach Knight has sent a message loud and clear to each and every member of the Big Blue Nation…
He doesn't want to be your facebook friend.

Shabazz chooses UCLA, but...Noel chooses the CATS!
Timeline of how the night went, 7:45--Shabazz Muhammed commits to UCLA, not a big shocker...best of luck to him, he's a great player, hurts that Kentucky didn't get him. 8:45--Noel is at the round table with three caps in front of him, thanks everyone, and then says, "I'm going to take my talents to..." he then proceeds to turn around, flat top and all, with UK shaved in the back of his head. Archie Goodwin gave a fist pump, and all of the commonwealth rejoiced. Flat tops will be growing in Lexington this summer. Cal and staff aren't done yet but, wow, a week later, and the cats pick up the #1 player in the class of 2012. Also, I think the cap choosing is a old fashioned way of choosing your school...that was by far the best decision making I've seen. Welcome to the big blue nation, Nerlens Noel.
Update: Here's the video of the decision.
Update: Here's the video of the decision.
Nerlens Noel and Shabazz Muhammad Decision - Where to Watch
Nerlens Noel and Shabazz Muhammad Live College Decision
Begins at 7:30 Eastern Time
ESPNU
Live on the Internet via ESPN3.com(Where Available)
What a year! A video of the championship run for the cats!
While were waiting for the decisions...which will probably get better ratings than Lebron James' "decision," let's take a look back at this past seasons' amazing championship run.
Where do you think Shabazz and Noel will go?
You've got Shabazz who's from Nevada, and his family is a huge Adidas family, UCLA is an Adidas school, and his father has also shown interest of him staying close to home. Kentucky has been high on Muhammad's list for some time now and as recent as this past week, he was quoted as saying that Kentucky helped their chances landing him when they won the NCAA championship. Then there is Duke, as bad as we'd hate to see him go there, there's a chance. Shabazz has said before that he really likes coach K, and the program.
Now, let's turn to Nerlens Noel. Most experts call him Anthony Davis 2.0. He's another intimidating shot blocker, can run a break, and Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio even said he's the best high school shot blocker he's ever seen. That's a big statement. Noel, hasn't said a whole lot but he's visited with all three schools mentioned before. A fan from Kentucky even offered his wife for him to come to UK, he thought it was funny and realized how crazy the big blue nation really is. His recruitment has been as back and forth as Muhammad's has...read something one day, and he's Kentucky's to lose, and then another day, he's headed to Georgetown. He speaks highly of Syracuse, so you can't throw them out either.
With the top two recruits in the 2012 class announcing tonight, possibly the biggest night in the history of recruiting if the cats are able to land both. All the experts have made their predictions, but I want to know what the fans think? I predicted just yesterday that I thought, Shabazz would end up staying close to home and playing for UCLA, while Noel came to Kentucky, but I hope the cats land both. As we wait until 7:30PM, let's see what everyone thinks...make your predictions in the comments below.

Kentucky Elite Eight Opponent Baylor Bears under NCAA Investigation
The NCAA announced today that they are investigating the Men's and Women's basketball programs. When I first glanced at the headline from ESPN, I for sure thought it was the NCAA Fashion Police giving them a violation for those ugly neon green uniforms they wore for most of the NCAA Tournament. To my surprise, that wasn't it. It seems that the coaching staff of both programs were doing a little extra recruiting in the form of improper phone calls and texts. The amount the NCAA is saying kinda blows you away. The number of violations could be over 1200 counts. Wow, coaches were burning their phones up. Next time call a stylist because I hope to never see those jersey's again ! Full Article

Bob Knight Talks Trash about Kentucky Again....
Bob Knight made a statement today about Kentucky fans being upset that he refused to say "Kentucky" during a interview late in the season. Now, he not only takes a shot at UK, he takes the shot at the fanbase by suggesting Kentucky fans are too stupid to realize Kentucky is in the SEC. Here is the quote :
“Kentucky managed to get irritated over that because I mentioned them as the SEC team rather than Kentucky. Well they might not have known that Kentucky was in the SEC. I thought that was always a possibility with them.”

Cal tells Alex Oriakhi that two players are returning next year.
UCONN transfer Alex Oriakhi had a meeting with Coach Calipari over the week. Oriakhi, said the meeting went well with Calipari, and he told him how things would be he if he transferred to UK, and he felt Coach Calipari was very honest with what he said. Meeting with Coach Calipari went very well, and some very interesting information was taken from the discussion, Oriakhi said that Calipari told him that two players would be returning from last year's squad. With that being said, Calipari has to be referring to two players that was in the six man rotation. I'm guessing it's Lamb, and Teague, both aren't projected lottery picks, and returning for another year could help their stock. Another hint that it isn't Davis, and Jones, and more of a chance of it being the two guards, when asked if it was appealing for him to come and play at UK, Oriakhi responded with very appealing. The next couple of weeks could be interesting.
Nike Hoops Summit Tonight!
The Nike Hoops Summit is tonight, and you know what that means. Well, it means that the big blue nation gets one last look at Shabazz Muhammad, Nerlens Noel, before they announce their decision on Wednesday, and Archie Goodwin who is already committed to be a Wildcat. They'll be playing against some of the best players outside the United States. The Nike Hoops Summit will air at 10PM on local fox sports networks. This game has featured a lot of great players including, Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Marquis Teague, John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Kyle Wiltjer, and even introduced the world to Enes Kanter. If you have a channel that's showing the game, try and stay awake. Hopefully Archie Goodwin will be in the ears of Noel, and Muhammad. Highlights of last year's game in the video below.
The Year To Come
*Wipes Forehead* Wow, what a season! The journey may have began when John Calipari was hired to take over this rich basketball tradition, but in my opinion, the journey of this particular season started on April 18, 2010. That day, in the mist of everything that was the Draft Cats, (in my bedroom to myself, of course) I guaranteed that the 2012 Wildcats would win a National Title because of the signing of Michael [Kidd]-Gilchrist. At the time, he was the #1 recruit in the nation. Prior to Anthony Davis' freakish growth spurt. I knew that with him coming to the BBN, only more players were bound to follow. Add along, Davis, top 5 recruit Marquis Teague, and 5-star Kyle Wiltjer and you had the makings of greatness. O wait!, my bad! Some guys named Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb had "Ok" seasons in 2010-2011 and decided to return with an older guy named Darius Miller.
Harrow drives by Wiltjer for an easy basket. |
Fast forward to present day, and you know what? I was right.
After the incredible
season of 39-2, the accomplishments received by all the players (Lol at Davis),
and a National Title, it really was a GR8 year. The incoming freshmen look
awfully good and I would venture to say that they will hold up to their expectations.
Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress alike have the ability, if it weren't for the
one-and-done rule to come out of high school right now and play in the league.
Will Cauley is solid in the paint and the hopes of either Nerlens Noel and
Shabazz Muhammed make you almost lose sleep at night not even a week removed
from the Championship Game. This talk about Alex Oriakhi may not be a gust in
the wind after all. My guess is that the decision of Noel affects that however.
As well as the decision of Shabazz has a say in whether Lamb or Teague returns.
Wiltjer responds with his Davis impersonation. |
Many people outside of Kentucky and maybe even here have forgotten all about former 5-star recruit, Mr. Ryan Harrow. The gifted point guard that transferred from N.C. State after a coaching switch last season. What about Mr. 3 Goggles himself, Kyle Wiltjer? Kyle has all the tools that you ask for on the offensive side of the ball. Add some bulk over the summer and you're looking at a possible 6th man depending on newcomers.
What am I getting at?
Although, it is highly unlikely that more than 1 player will return from "#8", if that one person does... I rest my case. You're looking at (Yea, I know we say it every year but I'm not kidding.) the best recruiting class of all time. Get your popcorn ready once again, the recruiting trail is on fire late. Kick back and watch some baseball. I mean, the Bat Cats are #1 in the country right now and hopefully it stays that way! Football will be here shortly and they look like they have a lot of promise with a solid 2012 class as well. Before long, you'll be camping out in 45 degree weather for those little tickets to that special event.
By the way, is Darius Miller coming back? Haven't heard anything. O well, C-A-T-S!

Darius Miller : Should His Jersey be Retired?
Maysville Kentucky's favorite son just helped his Kentucky Wildcats win their eighth National Championship. Darius Miller has become on of the, if not the, most beloved Wildcats of all time. The question now becomes, should his jersey be retired?
It has been a very long drought for retired jerseys being raised in Rupp Arena. The last jersey to retire was that of Jamal Mashburn in 1993. I believe that Rupp Arena is way past due to put another player's jersey up in the rafters, and that jersey belongs to Darius Miller.
To support my argument, let us take a look at some career stats for Miller. First off, he is a member of a National Championship team. That is something that Mashburn can't say. Also, Miller has played in more games that any other Kentucky Wildcat in history. He has helped lead 2 teams to the Final Four, in which we hung banner eight this year. Don't forget that Miller was the SEC Tournament MVP in 2011.
Besides all his excellent basketball stat resume, there is one really huge factor that really weighs above the rest. Darius Miller could have just called it quits and transferred during the Billy G era. Billy really did a number on Darius and I would not have blamed him one bit if he had high tailed it out of there. Good thing for Kentucky , Darius decided to stay. Miller has seen it all with the Wildcats and has been there every step of the way with every Wildcat fan. From NIT to hanging banners, Darius Miller was 100 % along for the ride supporting and playing for his Wildcats. His loyalty and convention for this team rivals that of any other Wildcat to wear the historic Kentucky jersey. With all that said, come on UK..... put the # 1 jersey up in the rafter right next to the greats. He deserves it.

Anthony Davis on Jimmy Kimmel(Full Video)
Most valuable player of the final four, and NCAA champion, Anthony Davis was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel. Davis cracked a few jokes about going to Asia after winning, which he hadn't, and asking his professors for more days off. Being quite all season, the interview above shows the personality of the player of the year.

Alex Oriakhi to meet with Coach Calipari today.
UCONN big man, Alex Oriakhi is transferring, and looking to play for a top tier program. So, today he's meeting with THE top program and Coach Calipari. Duke, North Carolina and other schools are interested in the 6'9, 240 junior big man. Many are wondering if he has to sit out a year due to transferring but with the situation at UCONN, he doesn't have to sit out and he'll get to play his one year of eligibility. With the possibility of adding him to the UK roster and with Anthony Davis 2.0(Nerles Noel)being added too, Kentucky may end up having the best front line of all of college basketball next year.
“Who Wants a Kansas 2012 National Championship Tee Shirt?”
I was recently appointed head of a national committee to distribute the pre-made 2012 University of Kansas National Champion tee shirts. Our task was to find a suitable source to quickly move the highly anticipated large quantity of unmarketable Jayhawk cotton.
Our first thought was to contact homeless shelters and outreach programs to clothe the desperately needy. The result was unexpected but understandable. Once the targeted parties were made aware of what the actual clothing represented they found it to be insulting and almost unanimously undesirable. I say almost due to a few spirited hobos willing to accept a shirt with hopes of hazing the first among them to pass out or for use as a starter for the evening fire. As I listened to them laughing in the background of the call, it was referred to as awakening to find yourself the recipient of a J-hawkin’! Oh, those loveable hobos!
Another option was to use the foreseen bulk of Kansas national title tees as a way to assist maximum security prisons across the nation experiencing a clothing shortage due to over population. We started by contacting a prison inside the state of Kansas because we thought that to be the most sensible plan of action. That plan was blocked Anthony Davis style! We were told that death row inmates collectively responded with “We wouldn’t be caught dead in one!” Oh, those lovable death ro... nevermind.
The task was now growing increasingly frustrating, though that emotion was replaced with the dull ache of a potential stomach ulcer upon the closing minutes of a call from the University of Kansas’s head coach, Bill Self. He softly murmured that he had only pre-ordered two national title tee shirts and was planning on using one as a gag gift for Clark Kellogg. Bill said he didn't really anticipate actually winning the game and was just excited about being part of a game where he coached against a group of future NBA players and the greatest coach in his profession. He also made a joke about The Fray getting their clothing from a local friendship center that I didn’t get until just now. That Billy was a character! He did however offer us the remaining shirt.
I was now heading a committee with no purpose. Incredibly disappointed, I am on my way back into the boardroom prepared to dismiss the committee on only the second morning of business when I receive a blessing in the form of a ringing cell phone with an incoming call from a 502 prefix. It was a noticeably anxious fast talking guy calling from Louisville who insisted on being called “Slick Ricky”. Slick had apparently made an overzealous investment and was hoping to discreetly move an insanely large amount of merchandise, and quickly!
I can’t wait to get the hobo’s reaction to this one! I’m expecting something along the lines of a joke starting with a Sears and Roebuck catalog setup, a dirty bird reference, leading into a more suitable source of outdoor tissue paper punch-line! Ya just gotta love those hobos!
For those of you wondering what happened to the remaining KU National Championship tee, the committee decided to send it overnight delivery… to President Obama.

Dorothy is no longer in Kansas, and apparently Kentucky isn't either.
After the loss on Monday night, fans were upset, and apparently there is a street in Lawrence, Kansas that is named Kentucky, and those upset fans decided to take the street sign down.
Coach Calipari Responds to NBA Rumors
Per CoachCal.com :
Big Blue Nation, breathe. Relax. Calm down. Enjoy the championship.
I just talked to Mike DeCourcy and Andy Katz and they asked me if I was going to jump to the NBA. What?! We just won the championship a day and a half ago. The only three things I’m trying to decide on is when I’m going to go see a few recruits, how I’m going to get through all these voicemails and when do I get a chance to get some sleep.
But for those of you that need to hear it again, let me repeat what I told Andy and Mike: I’m not going anywhere. I have the best job in the country. Why would I leave after we’ve just won a national title? We’re trying to catch UCLA, folks. I have been blessed. I’ve got more money than I’m ever going to need or my family can spend, so I don’t have to make a decision based on finances.
Let me assure you that you will see me at NBA games this summer … to watch our former players. I’m not going to give up my lifestyle based on a few rumors, and I will continue to go to NBA games to see my family, friends and former players. I’m even going to a game tonight.
But relax, Big Blue Nation. Sit back and enjoy this special time. We’ve waited 14 years for this, so let’s not let anyone ruin this for us. No one’s stealing my joy or my players’ joy. Don’t let them steal yours.
Signed

Championship Game National Anthem by the Fray , Good or Bad?
Call me old fashioned, but I am the only one who disliked the way the Fray performed the National Anthem during the National Championship game last night? First, let me be clear, I have no issues with the Fray. That is kinda their style of music which is mostly good stuff. It is just not right for the National Anthem. I cringed a little as it was going on. The way he did the vocals isn't actually the part that I had the problem with. It was the acoustic music in the background. To me, it just sounded off a little, and more than that, a little weird. Maybe I'm being too judgmental on this? What did you think? Did you , the members of the Big Blue Nation, enjoy it?
