The Anthony Davis Effect - How Did His First Final Four Game Stack Up?
The Kentucky Wildcats defeat the Louisville Cardinals 69-61 to move on to the National Championship game. This is the first time that Kentucky has made it to the final game since 1998. Of course, it has been a team effort for our beloved Wildcats to reach this last stage in the game of college basketball. Clearly, this team is lead by super freshman Anthony Davis. He has led the Cats all season long and this Final Four game was no different.
To be quite honest, Anthony Davis' performance tonight was historic when compared to other in the history of the Final Four. Davis did what he has done best all season, everything. He scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and swatted 5 Louisville shot attempts. The last person to record over 15 points, over 10 rebounds , and over 5 blocks in Final Four game was Danny Manning. That was in 1988. If my math is correct that means it hasn't been done in 24 years. Pretty spectacular if you ask me.

Blue vs. Red
We are now less than 24 hours away from not only the biggest match-up in Kentucky/Louisville history, but the biggest game of this season. The Cats are 2 games from the 8th title in this program's illustrious history. Kentucky has the series lead at a 29 to 14 advantage, winning the last 3. One may ask, why haven't the teams met more? The answer is that the two first met in 1913 but there were no games between 1922 and 1948 or from 1959 to1983. This rivalry has a different meaning than let's say North Carolina and Duke. In the state of North Carolina you have schools besides the two blue bloods like NC State, Wake Forest, and a host of other smaller schools that actually contend among the basketball world. In Kentucky, it is either Blue or Red. Just being honest, the majority of this state cheers for the Cats and even the city of Louisville is said to be at a ratio of around 65/35 in favor of the Cards. When it comes down to it, we are all Kentuckians at heart but on game day, things change.
Now, kick back and rest all day Saturday, you're going to need it. This could go down as one of the greatest tournament games of all time. Or, it could just be a feast for the Cats as they pounce on the birds, either way enjoy!
Let me just drop it to you simply:
Blue vs. Red
State vs. City
15 Final Fours vs. 9 Final Fours
7 Championships vs. 2 Championships
Calipari vs. Pitino
Coaches: John Calipari and Rick Pitino |

Anthony Davis "Injured Knee Watch 2012" Update
Anthony Davis said that his knee was fine after the game against Baylor on Sunday. Apparently, that was not the whole truth. During his media time today, Davis said " I’m not going to lie, I felt sore. It was tight, and I really couldn’t move it. It was just all the adrenaline that kept me going during the game. It started hurting after the game." After he said that I had some concern. However, soon after Davis explained that his knee is now really fine and back to normal. Davis told reporters that he practiced fully on Wednesday with no problems. Great news for the Cats. The knee is officially fine and ready to go against the Cards in the Final Four.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist - "Tough as Nails"
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is the toughest player on the floor. There is no question about that. There is something that has been bothering me that I haven't really written much about. I've heard many in the media mock MKG because of his interview skills. Admittedly, I've noticed him struggle with interviews throughout the season but chalked it up to just being nervous in front of so many people. I'm actually the same way. Get me in front of more than a couple of people and I start to shake and tremor a little. It turns out that I was wrong about MKG being nervous. From an article I recently read, I found out that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist suffers from a stuttering problem that he has had from childhood. Imagine trying to overcome that problem as a normal person going through life. It would be tough. Now, imagine fighting the problem in front of thousands and thousands of people. Yeah, it would be almost impossible. However, I think MKG is doing a pretty good job of it. The more I find out about him, the better I like him. He is tough as nails.

The Calipari Effect
Before last season, Kentucky had gone on a huge Final Four drought. The last time Kentucky was in the Final Four was in 1998. UK had some very close calls and great teams since '98, but never got back to winning tradition under Smith and Billy G. Enter John Calipari and that all changed.
The media does not give Calipari near the credit that he deserves. He has done a phenomenal job so far at Kentucky. Coach Cal has only been here for three seasons, yet has now taken UK to the Final Four twice. It took Rick Pitino 7 years to say the same.
John Calipari is a recruiter first. That is his bread and butter. He has become the king of "One and Done" and makes no apologies for it. Upon taking the Kentucky job, he told media that in order to be the best basketball program, you have to recruit the best players. In his third season, he has had the number one recruiting class in the nation all three years. This has resulted in 1 Elite 8 and now 2 Final Fours, and maybe the championship. It is going to be hard to argue against his recruting if the Cats can pull it out 2 more games.
Besides being a super recruiter, he is also a tremendous coach. It takes really something special to infuse high school all-americans with defensive mindsets. There is also the issue of ego that Calipari must deal with. In order to run a team filled with elite athletes, you must convince each player that the team is more important than the individual. So far , Calipari has mastered this.
Mitch Barnhart(Kentucky AD) will be remembered in the future as the AD who lured Coach Cal to Kentucky. In only his short time at UK, Calipari has made so many strides to bring Kentucky back to the top of college basketball. He is a coach who shares the same pride in winning as the Kentucky fan base. I predict he will go down as one of the greatest to be on the sidelines at Kentucky.

2012 Final Four (New Orleans)
Kentucky/Louisville & Ohio State/Kansas |
How bad do you want it?
It is set, Kentucky will take on Louisville at 6:09 ET on Saturday and Ohio State and Kansas will follow them up at 8:49.
My money is on Kentucky, but what do I know? As fun as it will be playing the Cards, the Cats must not get complacent, which I feel like they did last season against UConn. There are still two games ahead of us and we have to show up. But don't worry, having 7 potential 1st-round draft picks on your team makes you feel pretty good about one's chances, and don't think for a second John Calipari doesn't know that. As bad as I hate to say it, Louisville is a solid squad coached by a Hall of Famer in which I'm not allowed to mention his name. They have great defense and will look to put Kentucky and mainly Marquis Teague in sticky situations like they did in late December. We'll see how the young guard takes the challenge. Ohio State has improved since the mid-point spot in the season and I feel as though they are the second best team in the country (that is including Marshall's injury for Carolina) even without the tournament. We all remember the Kansas game earlier in the season and don't think they forgot either. Thomas Robinson is the co-favorite for Player of the Year with Anthony Davis for a reason and he has a good core group of teammates.
It shall be exciting, so get your popcorn ready. I wrote a few weeks back about could this be, "GR8?" and so far that has held hold. This team is amazing to watch and even better when you break it down. Let's go get this title and reclaim or spot as the best college basketball program in the country. Go Cats, Go Big Blue!
Video : Anthony Davis Injury and Update
The Kentucky Wildcats move on to meet Louisville in the Final Four. It didn't come without a couple of hiccups. This play made my heart stop for a second or two. Atleast, it sure felt like it. The way Davis was grimacing, I thought for sure his knee was hurt really bad. To my happy surprise, Davis came back in and played well the remainder of the game. There is still no official word about the injury now, but I thought Davis was back to pretty much normal by the end of the game. I'll have any updated posted if there is any.
Kentucky Wildcats Players Transfer Rumor
Alex Oriakhi's (UCONN) father told ESPN that he will be transferring from UCONN after this semester. The reason for the transfer is due to UCONN's suspension from the NCAA Tournament in 2013. Rumors are circulating among most Kentucky sportswriters that his possible destination will be the Kentucky Wildcats. Oriakhi is a big body that would come in with loads of experience and a National Championship under his belt.

Assistant coach Orlando Antigua could be the next head coach for Duquense
It was a high scoring, fast pace, great free throw shooting game to beat Indiana last night. Assistant coach Orlando Antigua has been very successful with his time under Calipari, and now colleges are noticing. Gary Parrish of CBS Sports predicted yesterday morning through twitter that coach Antigua would be the next head coach for Duquense and former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard be his replacement. Howard has ties with Billy G, both being assistants for Bruce Weber at Illinois. Howard was also an administrative assistant for the cats during Billy G's very long 2 year tenure at Kentucky. It would be sad to see coach Antigua go, being known for his great recruiting and for just being part of the big blue nation, but when the opportunity arises you've got to grab it. Whatever Coach Antigua decides to do, we wish him the best.
Quick note: While researching about Coach Antigua, found out he was featured in the movie Little Nicky as a Harlem Globetrotter. He's on the left to the guy with the fro about 3 seconds into the video.
Letter to the Editor
I received this well written letter this morning from a member of the Big Blue Nation :
There is a poll on the right side of your website. It asks who is the most important UK player for the remainder of the tournament. I think that each of the players have to be ready to step up at any given moment and deliver their best. Whether it's Lamb driving or hitting 3's; Davis with his lob dunks, long range jumpers or game changing defense; Teague controlling the game with assists or scoring; Jones being a beast on both ends of the floor; MKG - doing it all - shutting down the opponents best player or his acrobatic drives; Darius slashing to the rim or timely 3's. Wiltjer coming off the bench and taking a cold three and stroking it. This team just has to continue to be unselfish and they will control how this tournament ends. I am fortunate to be a fan of this team. Go Big Blue!

Kentucky defeats Indiana 102-90 - "HIGH OCTANE"
In an offensive onslaught not seen until now in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky gets revenge on Indiana. I hope you didn't blink because you may have missed something. For one of the few times ever, I agreed with Clark Kellogg when he said that they never needed to turn on the shot clock for these two teams.
After only a couple of minutes in the game, Anthony Davis picked up 2 fouls and headed to the bench. It was beginning to look like Bloomington all over again. Moments later, Zellar picked up his second foul. That sent him to his bench as well. After that, the offensive explosion happened for both teams.
My pick for player of the game, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Despite being mugged by Indiana the whole game, Kidd-Gilchrist put a double double on the stat sheet. He ended up with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Kidd-Gilchrist also went a perfect 10-10 on the charity stripe.

The Man From Maysville - Darius Miller
Kentucky grown Darius Miller stepped up big in Kentucky's win over Iowa St. Darius had a look in his eye that I don't think I have ever saw from him. Miller played with confidence all game. Confidence is something that he has been lacking for the last 3 years. Finally, in game 2 of the NCAA Tournament, the real Darius Miller showed up.
Miller's stat line reads : 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. He also went 3-6 from beyond the three point line. Every time that Kentucky needed a score, Darius Miller stepped up and knocked down a shot. Darius just has to keep it up for 4 more games ! Go Big Blue !
